Statement Of Faith - Second Draft – Due March 15th, 2009 @ 4pm
(At the start of the annual Polity & Pizza event)

The 2nd draft of each confirmand’s Statement Of Faith is due on the afternoon of the annual Polity & Pizza event at 4pm on Sunday, March 15th.  This draft should include the student’s beliefs of what they’ve learned since the start of class in September 2008.   The 2nd draft must be a continuation of the 1st draft.  The student must ”add on to” the 1st draft…do not start a whole new statement please!

Don’t forget, your second draft can include THE CATECHISM (Questions 1-6), THE CHRISTMAS STORY, THE 24/7 EXPERIENCE VIDEO (day 2 – The Simple Way movement with Shane Clairborne), JESUS WITH DIRTY FEET BOOK (chapters 7 – 9), WHY DID GOD SEND JESUS?, any of Pastor Chuck’s talks from Monday night Passage, and ANYTHING COVERED IN THE WEEKLY SUNDAY MORNING, WEEKLY MONDAY EVENING & MONTHLY EVENING CLASSES.   You can also use past homework, worksheets, handouts, personal & family experiences, interviews, songs we’ve learned, words we’ve written down, everything in your scrapbook, etc.  At this time, you will have completed three paragraphs (around 300 – 400 words).  Yes…your parents can help you and join in on this project.  Remember, this is your second draft…it does not have to be perfect.  You are still building on your faith statement.  Remember to approach this 2nd statement in the following manner.  Look at all the topics we’ve covered since September 2008, then ask yourself the following questions:

  • From what you learned…What do you believe about God? (Tell us about the big picture of your views)
  • From what you learned…What do you understand about God? (Even if you don’t believe it…what do you THINK God intends for us)
  • From what you learned…What pulls us away from a relationship with God? (What do we do or not do that makes us broken)
  • From what you learned…Who is Jesus and why did he come or why was he sent?
  • From what you learned…Why do we need to have a relationship with Jesus?

Use these questions as a basis for what you want to say…and write about what you’ve learned so far…you will then have your second draft!

Your final actual/polished Statement Of Faith will be due on Monday evening, May 18th at 6:00pm.  This final statement will be a culmination of all your studies.  It will be approximately 5 paragraphs long (approximately 500 – 600 words – about one paragraph per question above).  This is where you will take everything you learned since September 2008 and put your feelings and beliefs about these topics into one solid belief package!  We will be talking about this in class in upcoming months.

Confirmation Requirements Summarized/At – A – Glance:

  1. Every Sunday morning (as scheduled) – Meet Pastor Chuck in Fellowship Hall (by the stage area) no later than 9:15am.  All Confirmation Commissioning Class members are required to assist in staffing the GodZone church school teachers ministry at that time.  Students will be dismissed by 10:45am.  Class members are allowed to miss 4 Sunday morning meetings before having to do make ups.
  2. Every Monday evening (as scheduled) – Meet Pastor Chuck and the “Passage” Junior High Ministry staff in Fellowship Hall from 7pm – 9pm for youth fellowship gatherings and events.  Class members are allowed to miss 4 Monday evening meetings before having to do make ups.
  3. Every 3rd Monday evening (or as scheduled – sometimes 2nd Mondays) – Meet Pastor Chuck in his office from 6pm – 7pm for Confirmation Class focused lessons and discussions.  Class members are allowed to miss 2 Confirmation Class 3rd Monday evening meetings before having to do make ups.
  4. Each student must complete at least 4 “Outside Activities” as per the Confirmation Class handbook in order to make their confirmation.  Please remember AT LEAST ONE of these “Outside Activities” has to be a session meeting (3rd Tuesday of each month – September thru June…AND…only one “Outside Activity” can be school or community related – the rest have to be service to the church).
  5. Each student must attend at least 10 worship services of their own choice from September 2008 thru June 2009.  Worship services are each Sunday morning at 8am, 9:30am, and 11am.  When a student attends a worship service, they must fill out a “pew card” of their own with their own name (not grouped with the family).  This is the only proof a student will have that they attended worship.  If I don’t receive a card…then I have no proof the student attended.
  6. Each student must attend the Confirmation Class retreat in March 2009.  News and information will be available as soon as possible.
  7. Each student must attend the Polity & Pizza event in March 2009.  This event is located in the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan.  News and information will be available as soon as possible.
  8. Each student must complete any “Take Home Projects” in a timely manner as scheduled.  These projects if any are listed below.
